HollySys Supports Commissioning of Shanghai Electric Taonan Wind-Biomass Coupled Green Methanol Demonstration Project

On July 25th, 2025, HollySys supported the commissioning of the Shanghai Electric Taonan Wind-Biomass Coupled Green Methanol Demonstration Project.

As a pioneering large-scale commercial green methanol project to achieve full-process EU ISCC certification, the facility has an initial capacity of 50 KTA. The green methanol produced meets EU carbon emission standards across its life cycle.

HollySys delivered a comprehensive HOLLiAS® integrated solution covering Distributed Control System (DCS), Safety Instrumented System (SIS), GDS (Gas Detection System), OTS (Operator Training System), APC (Advanced Process Control), IDCS (Intelligent Dispatching & Control System), CMS (Carbon Management System), and cybersecurity systems. At the core is the IDCS, which acts as the project's centralized "smart brain." By aggregating real-time data across the entire production chain, including wind forecasting, power generation and transmission, water electrolysis, biomass gasification, low-temperature methanol wash, synthesis, distillation, and air separation, the system enables intelligent scheduling, coordinated hydrogen production, energy optimization, and carbon management. These capabilities allow for rapid response to wind power fluctuations, ensuring full on-site utilization of generated electricity. Meanwhile, the carbon management function provides real-time emissions tracking and dynamically adjusts grid electricity use, supporting the sector's low-carbon transformation.The project presented multiple challenges, from a tight schedule and complex workflows to the difficulty of integrating fluctuating wind power with stable methanol production. With no precedent for the biomass gasification process, the HollySys team worked closely with the owner and designers to tackle technical issues and ensure smooth commissioning, adding valuable experience to the development of green energy.

This commissioning marks both a milestone in HollySys' partnership with Shanghai Electric and a major step forward in advancing the green, low-carbon energy transition.
