Overview
High-Tech Smelting for a Global Market
Located in East Kalimantan’s Balikpapan region—one of Indonesia’s key mining hubs—the MMP RKEF Nickel Smelting Project is developed by PT Mitra Murni Perkasa (MMP), a subsidiary of the MMS Group. Indonesia, home to the world’s richest reserves of laterite nickel ore, is rapidly advancing its nickel value chain, and this project represents a major leap in processing capabilities. The facility adopts the advanced Rotary Kiln–Electric Furnace (RKEF) process, equipped with 2 × 48 MVA circular furnaces and converters, enabling the production of high-grade nickel matte with a nickel content of over 70%.
Solutions
Powering Efficiency & Reliability in Nickel Production
HollySys played a crucial role in this large-scale smelting project by providing a complete suite of intelligent control solutions. It includes electrical systems, intelligent field instrumentation, and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system tailored for two 55,000 Nm³/h gas furnaces. These systems support centralized monitoring, real-time data analysis, and seamless integration across the production process. HollySys’ solutions significantly enhanced the plant’s operational stability, intelligent level, and response speed, while also reducing manpower requirements and overall operational costs. The project team’s work was met with high praise from the client for its professionalism, reliability, and performance.
Results
Meeting Global Nickel Demand & Enabling a Green Future
With an annual output of 22,000 tons of nickel metal, the project contributes directly to the growing demand for nickel in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel manufacturing. Beyond productivity, it sets new environmental benchmarks through efficient, low-emission technology and smart process control. Strategically located near Indonesia’s new capital, the facility strengthens regional infrastructure, stimulates job creation, and serves as a key engine for sustainable industrial development. As Indonesia continues to move up the global nickel value chain, this project stands as a model of innovation, efficiency, and green development.
